Points for Attention When Using Sewage Pumps (Test Information)
Solid substances in sewage tend to deposit and cake in pipelines, especially during vertical conveyance. This can make it difficult for solids to be pumped out of the pump sump, or cause control valves to seize due to accumulated fouling. Therefore, to ensure reliable equipment operation, a certain minimum self-cleaning flow velocity must be maintained. Grundfos recommends a minimum self-cleaning velocity of 0.7 m/s for horizontal pipelines and 1.0 m/s for vertical pipelines. As a result, the flow rate of many small sewage pumps is often not determined by the actual required delivery flow, but instead by the self-cleaning flow rate of the pump. Furthermore, due to operating noise and economic considerations, the maximum flow velocity of sewage pumps shall not exceed 2.3 m/s.
Similarly, attention must be paid to the switching frequency of sewage pumps. The number of pump start-stop cycles should be compatible with the motor performance (and minimized as much as possible). For ease of maintenance, the sewage pump should be installed in a readily accessible location (either dry-installed or submersible type). Finally, check whether there is a possibility of flammable, explosive or hazardous media entering the system, or the potential generation of methane. If so, explosion-proof and safety-certified sewage pumps must be used.
